What is a Chausie
Date Added: December 19, 2008 06:59:29 AM

A Chausie, (pronounced chow-see) is a fully domesticated direct descendant of a hybrid breeding between a Jungle Cat and a domestic housecat.

Chausies are tall, statuesque, and regal cats with the musculature of an agile hunter. They exude the essence of "catness". The Chausie's medium to large upright frame promotes a graceful fluid motion that lends itself to jumping, running, and hunting. They are good natured, loyal, intelligent, affectionate, and highly playful.

The male Chausie tens to be one-third larger than the female. The tail length ranges from 3/4 to full length. The ears are large, mobile, and may be lynx-tipped. The current Chausie Standard allows for three colors. the brown ticked tabby, black. and silver-tip (which is unique to the Chausie Breed).

While the first Chausies (actually Jungle Cat hybrids) were first bred back in the late 60's, the breed was actually created to to offer those interested in exotic cats a safer alternative. Many different domestic cats were used for outcrosses in the beginning, but at the current time only the permissible Abysinian and the domestic shorthair are allowed.

In 1995, the Chausie was granted registration status within The International Cat Association (T.I.C.A.). In February 2001, the Chausie breed was advanced to evaluation status and they were allowed to be in the show halls.

In May of 2003, the Chausie was elevated to "Advanced New Breed" (ANB) status and now competes in the ANB rings at TICA shows internationally.
